Cross Pollination: Connection Through the Art of Encaustic

Join us for an opening reception March 5th from 5-9pm as we celebrate the Encaustic art work of Michele Bosak, Julia Heatherwick, Eric Hesse, and Sarah Seabolt.
Encaustic is an ancient painting medium that combines colored pigment with hot wax as a binder. Each artist in the exhibit uses this medium in a unique way showcasing its diversity and possibilities.
Show will run until May 1st.

Fall Workshop Wrap-up

Sunday Nov. 22^nd marked the end of Surface Gallery’s fall workshops. We had an excellent run of Saturday classes and wonderful participation. The gallery would like to thank all of its participants as well as its instructors for their creative optimism. The fall workshops ended with an amazing weekend of bookbinding taught by visiting artist, Michelle Moode. Preceding the construction of bookbinding, the gallery was turned into a ceramic studio for a day, as clay covered hands molded bowls. New to the fall session of workshops was “Improv for the curious” lead by artist Julia Heatherwick. During this class, the gallery was transformed into a team of improv actors who supported each other to step outside their comfort zones and onto a stage of possibilities. We hope everyone enjoyed each class as we look forward to our next session of Saturday workshops starting on January 16^th. New Fall Workshop Schedule

Starting Sept 19th, Surface Gallery will be offering its second set of workshops which include: block printing, figure drawing, watercolor painting, intro to improv, ceramic bowl sculpting, and book making. The workshops will be held each Saturday from 10-2pm during the month of September, October, and, November (with the exception of the bookmaking class which is a two day workshop from 9-2pm.) Coffee and pastries will be served with each class.

"ONE" opening

We celebrated the one year anniversary with the opening of "One" (new works by Yvonne Cavanagh, Vikki Cruz, Brent Eviston and Liz Sherwyn) on Sept. 4th. It was such a great evening! We would like to say a special thank you to Ron and Mary Cruz for sponsoring the exhibition and also to Valentien Restaurant and Wine Bar for providing the delicious appetizers. Thank you to the community for your support over the last year. We look forward to another exciting year in the downtown Arts District!

It's almost been a year since the grand opening of Surface Gallery. Here is a before and after picture of the gallery. The after photo is a picture of the gallery before the guests arrived on the evening of Sept. 5th 2008. What an incredible reception it was.
We are now getting ready for our big anniversary exhibition!

Our next opening "One" will be held on September 4th from 5-10pm with new work by artists Vikki Cruz, Yvonne Cavanagh, Liz Sherwyn and Brent Eviston. Join us for a celebratory evening!

We are so thankful to the Bakersfield community for your support of the downtown arts district and our little part of it. Workshop Wrap-Up

During the month of June and July, Surface Gallery opened its doors every Saturday morning to eager students of all levels interested in heightening their artistic abilities by participating in a summer workshop. The classes focused on a different genre of art each weekend ranging in traditional art form like drawing and painting to hands-on types of art work like book binding, block printing, and clay sculpting. The gallery would like to thank its participants as well as the instructors for their efforts and creative energy. Each class brought something new and exciting to the gallery and we look forward to offering them again in the fall. The new classes will begin September 12^th , please check back with us soon for further class descriptions and schedule.

Opening Reception of Michele Maule's solo exhibit "All the Things We Left Behind"

Friday, July 10th marked the opening of our current exhibit of new work by Portland artist Michele Maule. "All the Things We Left Behind" was an immediate success with the public and will be on display through the end of August. We would like to thank Michele for making the trek from Portland for the opening of this exhibition of work. If you haven't seen it in person, make sure to stop in! You don't want to miss this.

"ReInvent: Art from Recycled Materials" opened last night, May 1st, with a smash hit. Despite the rain and the blocked streets, we had a great turnout. Yvonne and I were thrilled to host this opening and to feature such an eclectic group of work. A very special thanks to those were bared the rain last night and were able to attend. We would also like to thank Jennifer Sanderson from Valentien for the incredible wine and food spread.And to BHS choir for their entertaining vocal performance, many thanks. "Reinvent:Art from Recycled Materials" will run till July 3rd.

BHS donates ceramic bowls

Last friday the ceramic students of Bakersfield High School kindly donated their one-of-a-kind hand made bowls to raise money for the Bakersfield Homeless Center. The brightly colored bowls sat beautifully in front of the gallery all night and drew in a crowd despite the rain. Thanks to the generous donations we were able to raise over $250 dollars to give to the Bakersfield Homeless Center.

On Friday Jan 23rd Surface Gallery celebrated its 3rd opening reception for the exhibit:"Layers." The gallery was packed throughout the night and the work was well received. The theme was created to celebrate the multiple roles an art teacher takes as both an educator and a working artist. With 8 artists interpreting the word "Layers," the work is reflective of each artist's diverse style. Surface gallery is appreciative of all the artists in this exhibit and happy to have such an eclectic body of work to share with the public. Thanks to all of those who made this event possible and for those who were able to attend the opening. The show will run until the Feb 28th.

Surface Gallery was very proud to have sponsored a square at this years via arte street painting festival. The event started last Friday, October 10 and ended Sunday October 12th. The participating artists were very fortunate this year with beautiful sunny weather all weekend long. A special thanks to Yvonne and Michelle Bilik for completing a very colorful and whimsical replica of one of Marc Chagall's paintings.

On Friday September 5th at 4:30 pm, Surface Gallery opened its doors for the first time to the public for the viewing of “Paper.” With over 300 guests in attendance, Yvonne and I were overwhelmed by the amount of support we received from the community. We couldn’t have been happier with the way everything turned out. The Clarinet quartet was a beautiful subtle sound to accompany the evening’s food and wine spread and the artwork was well received. A special thanks to everyone who helped out with the show, we couldn’t have done it without you. And many thanks to those who were able to attend; we look forward to many more successful openings.

My excitement soared today as our electrician called for a light bulb. After 3 weeks of anxiously waiting, all three of our pendant lights were installed and working this evening. The Le Klint designed fixtures now hang beautifully above the center of the gallery creating a luminescence that makes the space glow.

For the first time since we have had the gallery, Yvonne and I are happy to announce that we now have a place to sit down. Thanks to Debrah Dutton, we are now the proud owners of 6 beautiful chairs that occupy the space perfectly. We are also pleased to announce, that after last night, we now have baseboards. The wonderful new addition really made the space feel complete.

Yvonne and I are pleased to announce that the walls are done! We used 3 coats of paint to cover each wall at a total of 10 gallons of paint to cover the entire area. We are beat and still speckled in cumulus chips, but couldn't be happier with the overall look and feel of the space. It's actually starting to feel like an art gallery. Now onto lighting.

After a day of scraping at the mastic, with help from some new recruits, we have decided to throw in the towel. Even after we had let the solution sit, the job was still quite a workout. We have resorted to calling in some professionals to finish the job. We tried.

No More Carpet

Yvonne and I are one step closer to how we envision the space. But with the newly exposed concrete floors, we have experienced our first major problem- the residue of the carpet glue. Yvonne had purchased a soy based product called " Bean-e-doo," that assured an easy removal. After an hour of letting the solution sit, we started to scrape with force and the task proved to be anything but effortless. At the rate we were moving it would have taken days before we noticed any type of improvement. We started talking about other options before we thought about picking up the scraper again. We decided to give planA one more try and this time, let the solution sit for about 5 hours. Luckily this worked. We still have a lot of ground to cover, but have called in some friends who are willing to help.

Construction on Surface Gallery began on Saturday June 14th. We had two walls in the front and one in the office removed. We also had the door in the back moved to the office and we took out the carpet. Things are coming along.
